Former Agriculture CS and ex-Meru Governor Peter Munya has officially announced his intention to vie for the Meru gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election. Munya, who previously served as governor before joining President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet, said his return to local politics is driven by a desire to “restore the county’s lost glory.”
Speaking to supporters in Meru, Munya criticized the current county administration, claiming that leadership wrangles have stalled development and weakened service delivery. He assured residents that his comeback would prioritize uniting the region and reviving stalled projects.
His declaration now sets the stage for a fiery political showdown, especially against the incumbent Governor Kawira Mwangaza, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and repeated clashes with the county assembly. Other aspirants are also expected to join the race, making Meru one of the most closely watched counties in the 2027 elections.
Political analysts argue that Munya’s vast experience, national connections, and established grassroots networks could make him a formidable contender. However, he will also face the challenge of convincing voters that his return represents a fresh start rather than a repeat of past leadership.
